At Lockwood Pharmacy, we are excited to announce the launch of our new Ear Wax Removal Service, designed to provide you with safe and effective solutions for earwax build up. Ear Wax Removal

Types of Ear Wax Removal

1. Microsuction

Description: Microsuction is a modern, water free method that uses a microscope and a suction device to gently remove earwax and debris from the ear canal. This technique is ideal for most adult patients including those who have perforated eardrums.

Benefits: Quick, painless, and suitable for all types of earwax, including impacted wax.

Microsuction

2. Low Pressure Irrigation

Description: This method involves using a controlled flow of warm water to soften and dislodge ear wax. It is an effective way to thoroughly clean the ear canal and is often preferred for its gentle nature.

Benefits: Painless, effective for most earwax types, and provides a thorough cleaning of the ear canal.

Microsuction offers several advantages over low-pressure irrigation for ear wax removal:

1. Safety: Microsuction is generally safer as it doesn't involve introducing water into the ear canal, reducing the risk of infection or complications, especially for those with perforated eardrums or a history of ear surgeries.

2. Precision: The use of a digital microscope allows for a clear, magnified view of the ear canal, enabling more accurate and targeted wax removal.

3. Effectiveness: Microsuction can remove both soft and hardened wax, even when deeply impacted, providing more comprehensive cleaning and long-lasting relief from symptoms like hearing loss and tinnitus.

4. Speed: The procedure is typically faster and more efficient than irrigation, minimizing the time spent in the ear canal.

5. Dry procedure: Unlike irrigation, microsuction doesn't involve water, eliminating the risk of trapped moisture in the ear and reducing the chance of secondary infections.

6. Immediate results: Patients often experience immediate improvement in hearing and comfort after the procedure, with no downtime required.

7. Suitability for various conditions: Microsuction is safe for people with existing perforations, previous infections, or ear blockages, making it a versatile option for many patients.

While both methods can be effective, microsuction's precision, safety, and versatility make it a preferred choice for many healthcare professionals and patients seeking ear wax removal.

Microsuction offers several advantages over ear drops for ear wax removal:

1. Speed: Microsuction is a quick procedure, typically taking 15-30 minutes, while ear drops can take several days to work effectively.

2. Precision: Microsuction uses a fine suction device under direct vision with an operating microscope or magnifying loupes, allowing for more precise and targeted removal of ear wax.

3. Safety: Unlike ear drops, microsuction doesn't push wax further into the ear canal, reducing the risk of injury and complications.

4. Effectiveness: Microsuction can remove both soft and hardened wax, even when deeply impacted, providing more comprehensive cleaning.

5. Immediate results: Patients often experience immediate improvement after microsuction, whereas ear drops require a waiting period to soften the wax.

6. Cleanliness: Microsuction is a less messy process compared to ear drops, which can cause liquid to drain from the ear.

7. Versatility: Microsuction is safe for people with existing perforations or previous ear surgeries, making it suitable for a wider range of patients.

While ear drops can be useful for softening wax before removal, microsuction is generally considered a more efficient and effective method for ear wax removal, especially for larger or impacted wax buildup.

Yes, there are potential side effects associated with using ear drops for ear wax removal. While many people use these drops without experiencing serious issues, it's important to be aware of possible side effects:

1. Allergic reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the ingredients in ear drops, which can manifest as rash, itching, or swelling.

2. Dizziness: This is a commonly reported side effect, especially if the drops are not used correctly or if too much accumulates in the ear.

3. Temporary hearing changes: Users may experience a temporary decrease in hearing after applying the drops.

4. Ear discomfort: Some people report a mild feeling of fullness in the ear or slight itching inside the ear.

5. Irritation or pain: The drops can sometimes cause irritation, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin or existing ear conditions.

6. Tinnitus: In some cases, users may experience ringing or buzzing in the ears.

7. Ear infections: Incorrect use or overuse of ear drops can potentially lead to ear infections, especially in people prone to eczema or with a history of ear issues.

8. Foaming or crackling sounds: This is a common effect caused by the action of the drops breaking down ear wax and is usually harmless.

It's important to note that serious side effects are rare. However, if you experience persistent or severe symptoms such as significant pain, hearing loss, or signs of an allergic reaction, you should seek medical attention immediately. Additionally, ear drops are not suitable for everyone, particularly those with a perforated eardrum or recent ear surgery. Always follow the instructions carefully and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

If you experience dizziness after using ear drops, here are some steps you can take:

1. Remain calm and lie still in a dark room for a short period. This can help reduce the sensation of dizziness and allow your body to adjust.

2. Avoid sudden movements, as these can trigger or worsen dizziness. Take your time when getting up or changing positions.

3. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially if you're experiencing nausea. It's best to drink little and often.

4. Remember that mild dizziness is a common side effect and usually subsides within 1-24 hours after using ear drops.

5. Ensure you're using the ear drops correctly:

  • Warm the drops in your hands before use to avoid temperature-induced dizziness.
  • Lie down with the affected ear facing up when applying the drops.
  • Stay in this position for a couple of minutes after application.

If dizziness persists for more than 24 hours, becomes severe, or is accompanied by other symptoms like severe pain, hearing loss, or signs of an allergic reaction, stop using the ear drops and seek medical attention immediately. These symptoms could indicate a more serious condition or complication that requires professional evaluation.

Before undergoing ear wax removal at Lockwood Pharmacy, some preparation can be beneficial to ensure a smooth and effective procedure. Here are some steps you can take:

1. Softening Ear Wax: It is recommended to use ear drops, such as olive oil, to soften the earwax a few days before your appointment. This can make the removal process easier and more comfortable. Typically, you should apply the drops twice daily for about 5 to 7 days prior to your appointment. If needed, drops will be provided at the initial consultation.

2. Avoid Using Cotton Swabs: Refrain from using cotton swabs, as they can push the wax further into the ear canal, complicating the removal process.

3. Medical History: Inform the pharmacy staff about any recent ear infections, surgeries, or medications you are taking, especially blood thinners, as these may affect the procedure.

4. Pain Management: If you are prone to ear discomfort, discuss with the pharmacy staff the possibility of taking over-the-counter pain medication before the procedure.

5. Aftercare: After the procedure, keep your ears clean and dry for at least 24 to 48 hours to prevent infections.
